How Diu was shaped
Diu sat at the mouth of the Gulf of Khambhat, where Gujarati sultans, Mughal armies and Portuguese captains all wanted a harbour they could hold. The fortress went up in 1535 after Bahadur Shah of Gujarat asked Lisbon for help against Humayun; the Portuguese then kept the island from 1537 until December 1961. Cannons still face the sea on laterite walls. Churches, a compact old town and Nagoa’s beach sit a short ride away — a Portuguese Estado that never became another Goa.
What draws people here
Fort walls, easy swimming and almost no hurry. A three-night coastal pause that feels older and quieter than the Gujarat mainland.
Best time to visit
November–March. Summers are hot and humid; late-autumn cyclone weeks are rare but real. Plan about 4–6 days and keep one morning empty.
What to stand in front of

Nagoa Beach
